〔財經頻道／綜合報導〕日前退出北美頁岩油及天然氣事業的全球最大綜合礦業公司必和必拓（BHP Billiton），將對澳洲西部皮爾布拉（Pilbara）的礦業項目投資29億美元（約新台幣869億元），旨在提高該地出產的鐵礦石品質。
《彭博》報導，全球最大綜合礦業公司必和必拓14日表示，已批准投資澳洲西部皮爾巴拉地區的South Flank鐵礦石項目29億美元，旨在提高該地區出產的鐵礦石質量。
中國工廠近年為降低汙染，傾向使用品質較好的鐵礦石。而South Flank出產的鐵礦石品質，有助於將必和必拓在西澳洲礦區的鐵礦石平均含鐵量，從61％提高至62％。隨著品質提高，鐵礦石銷售價格也跟著提升。
必和必拓預估，South Flank項目將於2021年開始生產鐵礦石，預計可年產8千萬噸，取代即將耗盡的西澳Yandi礦井。
必和必拓的合作夥伴日本伊藤忠商事和三井物產，也將各投資South Flank項目2.7億美元（約新台幣80億元）和2.4億美元（約新台幣71億元），使該項目總投資額達34億美元（約新台幣1000億元）。
